Shadow Puppetry in South India

Produced by

The ancient art of shadow puppetry originated in India and spread to Anatolia, Southeast Asia and the Far East.

A puppet master is a virtual warehouse of oral stories passed down from generation to generation. This curriculum unit draws on an extended interview with shadow puppet master Lakshman Rao in Tamil Nadu. It describes in detail his method of making leather shadow puppets, various elements of his performances, and some of the epics and characters that make up his repertoire.

With this background, instructions and suggestions are provided for creating shadow puppets and putting on a performance.

The unit includes a bibliography of additional readings for teachers and for students and links to websites on puppetry, the Ramayana and tales from Panchatantra.

The unit meets numerous Wisconsin state standards for English language arts, social studies and art.

The author recommends this curriculum for grades 5-8.
