Multidisciplinary unit, historic and modern sections, case study approach, primary sources, stand-alone components
This interactive online unit was designed with K-12 students and educators in mind. It explores the history, culture, society, geography and environment of this fascinating city that sits at the crossroads between ancient and modern, East and West, tradition and innovation.
The first section covers Historic Cairo, from 3000 BCE to the present. It is subdivided into eight lessons, each covering a particular phase of Cairo's history. Each lesson is accompanied by photographs that illustrate landscapes and cityscapes, architectural and artistic styles, and other facets of the era.
The second section covers Modern Cairo. The five thematic lessons are designed to be used as a group rather than individually:
-
Introduction to the Modern City
-
Challenges for the Future
-
Religion and Faith in Modern Cairo
-
Life in Modern Cairo
-
Politics and Economy
Supplemental materials provide suggestions for usage and curriculum tie-ins. Includes teacher's guide, glossary and suggested links for further research.
