Portraits from the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict

A look at the conflict through the eyes of two families who experienced personal tragedy and loss.

This teaching resource begins with an excerpt from a People Magazine article about two families—one Israeli and one Palestinian—struggling for peace after each loses a family member to violence. The People article has a media bias which should be considered when utilizing this reading. The reading comes with discussion questions and activities pertaining to terrorism, point of view and history.

This resource also includes a brief narrative history and chronology of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and related questions.

The subject of this lesson is highly sensitive for many students. Students who have recently experienced personal tragedy may find some of the discussions difficult, as the resource notes. Also, many students have very intense feelings about this conflict.  By introducing voices from both sides, this resource is intended  to open up discussion while respecting everyone's feelings.
