Exploring Africa, 7A: Early African History, to 1500 CE

Looks at five great African kingdoms and civilizations and introduces some of the historians' tools

Module 7A of Michigan State University African Studies Center's online curriculum series Exploring Africa! introduces some of the tools that historians use to study the past: written sources, oral sources, material cultural and artifacts, and the study of language. Students learn that historians have their own interpretations and biases, and that history is constantly being revised and reinterpreted based on new evidence.

The activities focus on the ancient Egyptian civilization in the Nile valley; the kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhay in Western Africa; and the kingdom of Great Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. The role of trade and migration during this era of African history is emphasized. The module uses many images, maps and timelines.

MSU ASC's website also includes an index of resources for students of Africa.
